Melissa Crystal O'Neil, born on the 12th of July 1988[1,] is a Canadian singer/actress from Canada. O'Neil was the first Canadian woman to win Canadian Idol's third season, which aired in 2005. As an actress, she is famous for her performances as Two or Rebecca or Portia Lin in the Syfy science fiction show Dark Matter and as Officer Lucy Chen on the ABC police procedural drama series The Rookie.Although she was highly praised by judges, she suffered huge setbacks in both the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals as she was voted in the lowest three and the bottom two and bottom two, respectively. In shock, the judges encouraged viewers to vote for contestants who resembled Melissa who had the greatest vocal talent. O'Neil was highly praised for her performance and she did not drop back to the third place. Zack Werner declared that O'Neil was "a threat" to win the entire contest. O'Neil together with Rex Goudie, made it to the finals on September 7 the 7th of September, 2005. Werner, a judge, famously declared that the headlines of the following day's news will be "The King [Kalan Porter] has passed away. Long live the Queen." At the grand finale's final results ceremony on September 14 in 2005, O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, as well as being the first female winner, and (at 17) the youngest contestant in history.
